The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday participated in tree planting with a group of students from Aspire Academy as part of the ongoing Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees campaign.

As part of the initiative, launched by the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, 30 students from the academy planted trees at the Al Furousiya Street Development Project site.

The Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees campaign runs until the end of 2021.

The supervisory committee works under the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) in co-ordination with several other ministries and entities of the State, such as the Ministry of transport and Communications, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Qatar Museums, Qatar Rail, the Private Engineering Office and others.

The committee is responsible for five major tasks: the construction of central public parks, provision of dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles, development of the Doha Corniche, development of Central Doha and increasing afforestation and greenery areas.

The Al Furousiya Street Development Project, being implemented by Ashghal, includes planting 900 trees and 73,000sq m of landscape.

Mohamed Ibrahim al-Sada, assistant director of the Public Parks Department at the MME, said the ministry makes extensive efforts to plant trees across Qatar by implementing several initiatives.

He added that the initiatives are implemented in co-operation with Ashghal.

Eisa al-Maslamani, Aspire Academy deputy manager, said he is glad to see the participation of students in the initiative and added that the results of the campaign will be seen in future, adding that the youth are aware of environmental issues and the country’s vision.

Aspire Academy graduate and Qatar national football team player Abdulkarim Hassan said he was honoured to take part in the initiative.

The supervisory committee’s work will enhance sustainability through minimising environmental pollution and reducing the emission of CO2 through minimised consumption and conservation of energy resources.

It also focuses on the provision of more public transport options aiming at reduced use of private cars and improve lifestyle through clean and safe transportation.

Further, the committee also works to ensure a healthy environment within residential neighbourhoods and places of public gatherings through increased afforestation and landscaping, which will greatly help in reducing the temperature in cities.
